About The Solent area

The Solent is the stretch of water along the South Coast of the United Kingdom. Many water sports take place on The Solent, particularly yachting, as the Cowes Week sailing event is hosted on The Solent waters annually.

Hampshire is home to a major naval base (based in Portsmouth), as well as the world's oldest dry dock (Portsmouth Historic Dockyard) which is still in use, as well as being an open air museum housing famous ships such as HMS Warrior and HMS Victory.

Dorset is famous for a number of things, including: Lulworth Cove, the Isle of Portland and Durdle Door, all of which make up the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site.

Wiltshire is in fact a land-locked county, which is most known for it's pre-Roman archaeology. Both Stonehenge and Avebury are located in Wiltshire.

Sussex has been "split" into East and West since the 12th century and have had seperate county councils since 1888. West Sussex is well known for places such as Arundel Castle and Bramber Castle. It is a popular area for walking and cycling, as over half of its countryside is protected.
